Banner Printing in Dubai: What Happens When You Order

Banner printing in Dubai starts on a roll about a metre and a half across, standing on end in the corner of the production room. Nothing on it belongs to anybody yet. By the end of the week a few metres of that roll will be hanging off a fence in Al Quoz or standing behind a speaker at a hotel. Here is the bit in between.

How a banner gets made.

  1. 01

Your File Gets Opened by a Person

Someone opens the artwork and looks at it at full size before anything prints. Logos pulled from a website are the usual problem. They look fine on a laptop and go soft the moment they are two metres wide. We tell you then, not after.

  2. 02

The Roll Goes on the Machine

The material is loaded and the heads pass across it. Ink goes down wet and dries almost at once under the lamps. You can watch a two metre banner appear in a couple of minutes, top edge first, which is why proofreading happens before this point and not during it.

  3. 03

It Comes Off and Gets Cut

The printed length is trimmed down with a bit of spare material left on every edge. That spare is not waste. It becomes the hem, and a banner without one tears at the first eyelet it gets hung from.

  4. 04

    The Edges Are Finished

Hems get welded, eyelets go in at measured spacing, and pole pockets are sewn if the banner is going on a frame. Spacing matters more outdoors. Too few eyelets and the wind finds the gap between them.

  5. 05

    It Gets Rolled, Not Folded

Finished banners leave rolled around a tube. Folding puts a crease in that never comes out, and a crease catches light across a printed surface from a surprising distance.

We will be blunt about one thing. A cheap banner and a good banner look identical on day one. The difference shows up in week six, when one is still flat and the other has started to curl at the corners.

Sun, wind and air-conditioning.

Three things decide how long a banner looks good in this city. We match the material to all three.

Sun

Outdoor banners use inks made for exterior use, on flex that holds colour through a Dubai summer.

Wind

Mesh lets air pass through on fences and building fronts, and closer eyelets stop corners tearing.
