Thick Letters Come From Laminated Blocks
Beyond the thickness of available board, pieces are glued up into a block before cutting. The glue lines are visible on the edge and are usually treated as part of the look, running horizontally through each letter.
Grain Direction Is Decided Before Cutting
Running the grain horizontally across a word keeps it reading as one piece. Running it vertically makes each letter its own object. Neither is wrong and it has to be chosen before anything goes on the machine.
Every Face Gets Sealed
Including the back and the inside of the counters. A letter sealed on the visible faces only takes up moisture unevenly and cups away from the wall within a season in an air conditioned building.
Species Changes the Character
Light open grained timbers read casual and modern. Dark close grained ones read formal. The same letterform in oak and in walnut suits two completely different interiors.
It Is Warm to Stand Next To
This is the actual reason clients choose timber. In a reception lined with glass and stone, a wooden sign is the only element with any softness to it, and that contrast is doing the work.
Fixed From Behind
Hidden studs set into the back of each letter keep the face clean, with a small gap for air movement so the timber can breathe evenly on both sides. We leave the fixing holes slightly oversize too, so the letter can move a fraction with the seasons without splitting around a stud.
We have to be clear about outdoors. Solid timber on an external wall in this climate will open along the grain within a season whatever finish goes on it. For an exterior that wants warmth, a bronze or warm anodised metal gets closer and will still be there in ten years.
