It Weighs Almost Nothing
A life size figure in foamboard can be lifted with two fingers. That is why these get suspended from ceilings, fixed to partition walls and carried around a venue by one person all day.
The Face Is Paper, and That Is the Point
A clay coated paper surface takes print beautifully, so photographic detail and skin tones come out better on foamboard than on almost anything else at this price.
It Dents Permanently
Press a thumbnail into it and the mark stays. The foam crushes and does not spring back, which means a standee handled carelessly in transit arrives with visible damage.
Edges Show the White Core
Every cut reveals a pale line between the two paper faces. Against dark artwork that outline is obvious, so we either edge it or build a border into the design.
It Belongs Indoors
Any moisture separates the paper from the foam. A foamboard standee near an entrance or in a humid corridor delaminates at the edges within days.
Shipped Between Boards
Because the damage is permanent and invisible until it happens, these travel sandwiched between protective sheets instead of loose. Keep it away from the edges of a walkway. Foamboard damage almost always happens at hip height where bags and trolleys pass, and moving the piece half a metre further back prevents most of it. Carry it by the edges with both hands. Almost every dent we see arrived from somebody gripping the face to lift it, and a foamboard standee shows four fingermarks permanently from a single careless carry.
The straightforward comparison with cardboard: foamboard costs more, prints far better and is just as fragile, in a different way. Cardboard softens and bows. Foamboard stays flat and dents. Neither survives a second event in good condition.
