Wall-Mounted Directional Signs in Dubai: One Arrow, One Decision

A directional sign exists for one moment: a person reaches a junction in a corridor and has to choose. Wall-mounted directional signs in Dubai work when they answer that single question and fail when they try to answer several at once.

How it's made

From your file to the finished job.

Six steps happen between the brief and the finished job. Here they are, in the order they happen on our floor in Dubai South.

01 / 06

One Sign Per Decision Point

Signs go where the corridor branches, not at regular intervals along it. A sign in the middle of a straight run tells somebody something they already know and trains them to stop reading.

02 / 06

Two or Three Destinations, Maximum

Each sign carries only what is reachable from that junction. Long lists are directory content, and putting a directory at every corner means nobody reads any of them.

03 / 06

Arrows Sit Beside the Words

An arrow to the left of left pointing text, to the right of right pointing text. It sounds trivial and it is the single most common error in corridor signage, producing signs that read correctly and point confusingly.

04 / 06

Height Is Consistent Everywhere

Every directional plate across the building goes at the same height from finished floor level. Visitors learn where to look within two or three signs, and after that they find them without searching.

05 / 06

They Are Built to Be Updated

Slide in faces in a fixed frame. Departments move and floors get reorganised, and a building where the signs lag a year behind the reality is worse than one with no signs at all.

06 / 06

Installed Against a Walk Through

We fit against the schedule from the original survey and then walk the route as a visitor would, because a sign that reads correctly on paper can be hidden behind a column in reality. Anything we cannot see on that walk gets moved before we leave the building.

The constraint we raise on every scheme: there is a limit to how much a sign can fix. If the building itself is confusing, signage mitigates it but does not solve it, and past a certain point the honest recommendation is to change a door or a route instead of adding a fourth sign.
