The Print Goes on the Back
Artwork is printed in reverse on the rear face and backed with white. The front surface stays untouched gloss, so the image cannot be scratched and the colour reads through the thickness of the sheet.
Thickness Changes the Depth
Three millimetre reads as a panel. Eight or ten millimetre reads as a solid block with a glowing edge. The image is identical and the perception is completely different.
Standoffs Finish It
Polished bolts hold it clear of the wall and throw a shadow behind. Hanging an acrylic piece flush loses most of what makes it worth buying.
Shapes Are Not Limited to Rectangles
Acrylic cuts to any profile, so a piece can follow a logo, a map outline or an irregular shape. The polished edge follows the cut all the way round.
It Belongs Indoors
Acrylic yellows in direct sun over a few seasons and becomes brittle at the fixings. In an interior it holds for many years.
Supplied With Fixings
Standoffs, wall plugs and a drilling template come with the piece, so installation is marking and drilling instead of working out positions. Look at the piece against the actual wall colour first. Because light passes through the acrylic and returns, the surface behind it affects how the image reads, and a mid tone wall produces a noticeably different result from a white one. Allow a little extra time on large pieces. Thick acrylic is cut and polished slowly, and rushing the edge finish is immediately visible on the one detail people look at closely.
The honest maintenance note: acrylic dulls permanently if cleaned with solvent sprays, and most tired looking panels were cleaned to death instead of worn out. Warm water and a soft cloth keeps one looking new.
