Six steps happen between the brief and the finished job. Here they are, in the order they happen on our floor in Dubai South.
The Panels Are Not Equal Widths
On a tri fold, the panel that tucks inside has to be two or three millimetres narrower than the others. Cut them all the same and the inner panel catches on the fold and the brochure will not close flat. This is the detail that most supplied artwork gets wrong.
The Fold Type Sets the Reveal
A roll fold opens one panel at a time and suits a story told in order. A gate fold opens outward from the centre like doors and suits one big image. A Z fold shows alternating faces as it concertinas, so no panel is ever hidden.
Grain Direction Decides Whether It Folds Cleanly
Paper fibres run one way. Folding along the grain gives a smooth crease. Folding across it gives a ragged, cracked edge. We orient the sheet on the press so the main folds run with the grain, which is invisible work that shows up only when it is skipped.
It Has to Fit an Envelope or a Rack
A folded A4 tri fold slips into a standard envelope and stands in a literature rack. Design to an unusual finished size and the brochure needs a custom envelope and will fall over in the rack, both discovered after printing.
Folding Happens on a Machine, in Bulk
Printed sheets run through a folder that creases and folds them in one pass at speed. For a few hundred this is minutes of work, which is the main reason brochures cost so much less than anything bound.
Dummied in the Real Paper
We fold a blank in your chosen stock first, because a tri fold that works on a layout sometimes will not close in a heavier sheet.
One caution about panel widths. If the brochure has to be sent as a finished size we cannot change, the panel allowance has to come out of the design, so somebody loses a few millimetres of image on one panel. Better to decide now who loses it.

- 01Work at the finished sizeSet the page to the exact trimmed size of the piece, not a larger sheet with crop marks drawn in.
- 02Add 3 mm bleedRun background colour and images 3 mm past every edge that gets trimmed, so no white line shows after cutting.
- 03Keep text off the edgeHold text and logos at least 4 mm inside the trim line, clear of the blade.
- 04Send a print-ready PDFCMYK, fonts embedded or outlined, images at 300 dpi at final size. AI, EPS and high-resolution JPEG also work.
