It Cleans With a Cloth
Spills, footprints and handprints wipe straight off. A paper backdrop in the same situation is torn off and thrown away, which is the entire economic argument for vinyl.
The Finish Must Be Matt
Vinyl is naturally glossy and gloss is unusable in a studio. Photography grade vinyl carries a matt surface specifically to kill reflections from lights and windows.
It Rolls, and Rolling Matters
Stored on a tube, vinyl stays flat. Folded, it keeps a crease permanently, and a crease across a backdrop shows in every frame and cannot be retouched out easily.
It Sweeps From Wall to Floor
Heavy enough to lie flat on the floor and curve up the wall in one continuous sweep, which is what makes a full length shot possible with no visible line.
It Outlasts Paper Many Times Over
A vinyl backdrop used weekly lasts years. Paper is consumed constantly. Over a busy studio year the vinyl is usually the cheaper option despite costing more at the start.
Printed to Order
Plain colours, textures or a custom printed scene. Because it is printed, a vinyl backdrop can carry any image you supply at full width. Check the ceiling height and the drop before ordering. A backdrop long enough to sweep onto the floor needs real height behind it, and a roll that is too short produces a visible line exactly where the wall meets the ground.
The honest drawback is weight and handling. A large vinyl backdrop is heavy, awkward for one person and needs a proper tube and somewhere to store it. In a small studio that storage is a real consideration, since a tube long enough for a wide backdrop needs a clear wall or a ceiling rack to live on.
