It Comes on a Roll
Wide rolls hang from a crossbar or a wall mounted system. The roll is the product, and a studio keeps several colours hanging side by side ready to pull down.
The Surface Is Genuinely Matt
Paper gives the flattest, least reflective surface of any backdrop material. For product photography and clean portrait work this is why it is still used despite being disposable.
Colour Is Consistent Across the Roll
Manufactured in controlled batches, so the white at the top of the roll matches the white at the bottom. That consistency matters when a shoot runs over several days.
It Marks Immediately
Shoes, chair legs, water, a dropped prop. Paper records all of it instantly, and the marked section is cut away and not cleaned.
Waste Is Part of the Cost
Every session consumes some length. Budgeting a roll as a consumable instead of an asset is the realistic way to plan a studio's supplies.
Stored Hanging
Rolls are kept on their bar or upright in a rack. Laid flat they develop flat spots that show as a line across the backdrop when pulled down. Buy the widest roll your studio can physically hang. The cost difference per metre is small, the extra width removes most cropping problems, and a narrow roll is the limitation photographers notice first and complain about longest. Storage is the only real argument against the wider roll, so check the rack before ordering and make sure a full roll will actually fit where it has to live.
Being straightforward about where paper is wrong: anything involving liquid, food, pets or children goes through it at a rate that makes vinyl cheaper within months. Paper suits controlled shoots with careful subjects.
