Food Packaging in Dubai: What the Food Does to the Board
Paperboard is absorbent, and food is wet, hot and greasy. Food packaging in Dubai has to resist all three for the twenty minutes between a counter and a table, and the board is chosen for what is going inside it and not for how it prints.
Every option here, one quote for all of them.
What happens to your order before it reaches you.
Six steps, from the brief you send us to the moment it is in place.
Grease Travels Through Uncoated Board
Fat wicks into paper fibres and appears as a translucent stain on the outside. A grease resistant coating or a laminated barrier stops it, and without one a printed box carrying anything fried will show through within minutes.
Steam Has to Go Somewhere
A closed box of hot food fills with water vapour, which condenses on the inside, softens the board and makes the food soggy. Vent holes or a perforated panel let it out, and their size and position is a real design decision.
Heat Softens the Structure
Board loses stiffness as it warms and absorbs moisture. A box that holds its shape cold can sag under a hot item, which is why food boxes use heavier board than their size alone would suggest.
Printing Stays on the Outside
Where the board touches food directly, the inner face is left unprinted. Any design intended to be seen inside the box has to be arranged around that, and it is a constraint set by the application and not by the press.
It Is Handled, Stacked and Carried
Delivery boxes get stacked in insulated bags and carried at an angle. A box that cannot take weight on its lid crushes the food inside, so the closure and the top panel are doing structural work.
Specified Around the Actual Product
We need to know whether the contents are hot, wet, oily or dry before recommending a board, since those four describe four different materials.
We have to be clear about compliance. Suitability for direct food contact comes from the certified board and liner we buy, not from anything we do in printing, and we will supply the specification and the supplier documentation. Tell us at enquiry stage if food touches the surface, because it changes the material entirely.
