Glass Beads Send Light Back to Its Source
The film holds microscopic beads that return light along the path it arrived on. That is why it blazes for the driver whose headlights hit it and looks dull to somebody standing beside the road. Stand behind the light and it is dazzling. Step two metres sideways and it is grey again.
Printing Over It Costs Brightness
Every bit of ink sits between the beads and the light. Heavy solid coverage can cut reflectivity by half. The brightest reflective stickers are the ones with the least printed on them, so we keep solid areas small and let the bare film carry the brightness.
Grades Are Not Interchangeable
Engineering grade is the common one and it is adequate for signage and livery. High intensity prismatic is several times brighter and costs accordingly. The grade comes from how far away it has to work.
In Daylight It Looks Flat
Expect a slightly grey, slightly plasticky face by day. People who have only seen it lit are often surprised by this, so it is worth showing a sample to anybody approving the design.
Vehicles and Sites Carry Requirements
Commercial vehicle markings and site barriers are sometimes specified by an authority or a client's safety policy, down to colour and position. Get that specification before artwork starts, because retrofitting a compliance requirement onto approved artwork means printing it twice.
Checked With a Torch Before It Ships
We look at every reflective job in a darkened room with a light held at distance, because the only meaningful test of this material is the one the material is for.
Here is the limit worth knowing. Reflective film needs the light to come at it roughly head on. Mounted at a steep angle to the road, or on a curved surface, the return drops away sharply and the sticker stops doing its job.

- 02Add 3 mm bleedRun background colour and images 3 mm past every edge that gets trimmed, so no white line shows after cutting.
- 03Keep text off the edgeHold text and logos at least 4 mm inside the trim line, clear of the blade.
