Moisture Is the Enemy
MDF swells permanently once water gets into an unsealed edge, and it cannot be sanded back. Every edge, including the feet, has to be sealed before the board sees a wet pavement or a hose.
The Hinge Takes the Wear
Opened and closed twice a day, the hinge and the restraining chain are what fail first. Both are replaceable and worth having spares of.
Finished Before Delivery
Boards are sealed, painted and finished in the workshop, since on site touch up never matches and the edges are the part that matters. Stand it on a tile or a mat if the pavement is washed down. Most timber boards fail from the feet upwards, because the base sits in water every morning when the frontage is hosed, and the swelling starts at the feet where nobody is looking.
The honest comparison with aluminium: timber looks considerably better and needs genuine care. Left out in rain, hosed down by a cleaner or stood on a wet floor overnight, it will swell at the base and start to look tired within a season.
